Location: Maryland Hidden Gems

Location, Location, LOCATION. Photography isn’t just about technically nailing the photo, but all the visual elements that are a part of the image: the subject, the lighting, the location. I’m a Maryland based photographer. Despite it being a small state, there are so many different settings you can take your clients to. There’s tucked away small towns with main street vibes, vast fields with luscious trees and tall grasses, and gorgeous water views you don’t want to miss.

I’m always told the same thing “wherever you think is best.” I’d rather guide my clients to a place they are excited to capture photos in. There’s no one best place. In fact, there are SO MANY best places. It’s about finding a unique place and remembering the best place is the spot that makes your client excited for the session.

I allow my clients to give me potential locations first, especially if they have a specific setting in mind. A lot of the time I have a stashed list of places I want to shoot at, and pull from there for inspiration to help guide the location decision. I try to match the client with the best place that fits the vibe of their photos, like senior portraits in their hometown or picking a discrete field if they want more dreamy images.

I’m an off-the-beaten path type of person and am always on the hunt for some top-secret locations. I’m going to cover some of my recent favorite shooting locations in Maryland and give you the inside scoop.

Annapolis

Historic Annapolis, what could be more eye-catching?! There are so many different elements to this amazing city. First off, it’s the state’s capital. There’s amazing brick work all over. Buildings, houses, stores. The row homes are dreamy and each show personality with its color or its historic worn brick. Walking the streets of Annapolis feels straight out of a movie, truly cinematic. The atmosphere is great, it feels like a close-knit community. Don’t even get me started on the water-views. The golden hour session right at the water edge with the docked boats in the background…BEAUTIFUL.

Bel Air

Bel Air is definitely giving off the small town vibes. In this suburban town, there are spots everywhere. Want the low-key city look? The main street of Bel Air is lined with shops and businesses. Cute and simplistic, but provides a stunning set. This is where I take a lot of my local high school seniors because the main street of Bel Air is a focus of the town. Maybe the street views are not for you. Well there are untouched fields and specialty venues that give a more naturey appeal. I’ve been to The Liriodendron Mansion several times. Typically a wedding venue, but when it’s not booked it is an ideal spot for those simple landscape looks. The back yard area is filled with trees and with the right light, your photos will be warm and golden.

Severna Park

Close by to the state’s capital, Severna Park is another great location. It’s situated between Annapolis and Baltimore. This up-scale town is family-friendly and creates a simple landscape for your photos. I’m drawn to their water-front parks and forests. You get the best of both worlds: incredible water views and the sweet nature aesthetic. One of my most recent sessions was at Severna Forest Beach Club and it was breathtaking. The small pier, river, and houses lining the water provided a luxurious background for my couple at their gender reveal. They enjoyed their session and I could not have been more excited behind the camera capturing the moment at this location for them.

Owings Mills

I’ve been bouncing back and forth between Owings Mills and my hometown for the last several years. At first, the Owings Mills area was tricky to scout for locations. I found the most amazing locations when I least expected it. It is worth it to travel in your desired area and pinpoint any interesting spots you stumble upon. Irvine Nature Center is one of those incredible nature spots. Walk the trail a little bit until it reaches the open field and you’re ready to shoot with that golden hour sun. The trees, tall grass, open environment create that dreamy and boho setting for your clients. I also loved the Gramercy Mansion. Looking for a quaint bed and breakfast secluded in the woods? This whimsical, forest dream might be the place. This untouched landscape connects your client with nature and gives jaw-dropping scenery.

Final Tips

My list of locations continues to grow with more and more sessions. Not finding the exact location for your clients? Take a step back. Ask them a few questions to help guide the process. Consider places that have meaning, the time of year, seclusion, and available views. It is important to stay true to your image style while satisfying your clients needs as well. There are endless locations and traveling around your area will help pick or at least narrow the options.
